I agree with the recommendations of this article regarding redesigning leadership training completely from the scratch. Currently, I see more attempts to transfer the traditional training into the virtual world with the minimum amount of changes, so a complete redesign with all the modern possibilities makes sense.

However, in my experience the success of leadership training was rarely prevented by content or structure, but rather by organizational mindset. I have gone through a number of corporate leadership training, but I have not yet encountered and organization or leadership that is genuinely interested in getting involved in the development of the employees. There is little support in form of coaching and mentoring and leaders consider themselves too occupied to provide such support. But leadership development requires time, not just on the employee’s side, but also on the side of the organization and her leadership.

My most successful leadership program was one where I was supported and challenged by a mentor for a longer period of time and also participated in regular peer-groups to tackle common leadership challenges.
