One major difference between Birkman and other personality tests is the introduction of individual needs. This helps greatly in managing your own behaviors.
People will generally reflect back the behavior that you are exhibiting towards them. In my case I always try to provide structure and organization in the professional context. So my superiors would always do the same to me. However, one look at my Birkman makes it clear: I have a very high value in my normal behavior for structure, but a very low need in the same field. So while I give structure to my area of responsibility, I need maximum freedom to execute my work. Not understanding this has led to frustrations in the past, but now that I know I can better manage my environment.
